Result: To sustain the Varketili library project in Tbilisi, Georgia, and to keep the facility open to the public until additional funds are obtained.

Comment: The Varketili Community Based Organization started this library in 1998. The library is meeting a public demand for information and a place to exchange ideas in this low-income neighborhood.

Project Need

Working with the Virtual Foundation, Society Varketili began a community library project in 1998. The library was a remarkable success (please see original project proposal, Ex Libris: New Hope for an Ancient Society, for more information) and provided the residents of Varketili with both a library and a community gathering place. But when funding ran out in April 1999, the library was faced with closing its doors.
