Goal
The Mongolian Medicine Project is committed to an improved Mongolian health care system that provides diagnostic tools to assist rural clinics in providing the maximum appropriate level of services at the local level. The Mongolian Medicine Laboratory Project’s long-term goal is to see that all 342 soum (rural area) hospitals are provided with basic laboratories. Photo: Dr. Rensennorov practicing on the microscope
Implementation
The Mongolian Medicine Project has in the past two years provided four soum (rural area) hospitals with laboratories including donated microscopes, hematocrit centrifuges, supplies, equipment and training. When there is a laboratory at their regional hospital, the people of the region do not have to travel long distances for laboratory tests; they have better diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Providing improved health care in rural Mongolia enables the people to maintain their age-old lifestyle.
The next step is to build the capacity of these four laboratories by replenishing supplies and tests, and evaluating each site to determine next steps in providing laboratories to other soum hospitals. Mongolian Medicine Project has an additional donated laboratory, which will be delivered to Altanshiree in East Gobi.
Expected Results
All pilot project sites will be re-supplied with necessary one-use tests, which are especially helpful when the community has no fuel for electricity. The Mongolian Medicine Project will evaluate the use of labs in pilot projects, and based on those evaluations, will begin planning for laboratories for other soums.
Time Frame Mongolian Medicine Project will provide the donated laboratory, the supplies and training during the summer of 2004.
