Result: To provide Valentina Dmitrieva and her Public Education Center of Sakha with e-mail costs so that this remote region’s only e-mail connection for activists continues.
Comment: The Center also provides information to the media, campaigns against polluting industries, lobbies for legislation, and operates environmental education programs for school children. The Final Report for an earlier grant shows all the work that they do.
Donors: Middlebury Union High School Model United Nations [May 2001]; Middlebury Model UN Conference [November 2002]; Dr. Robert DiGiulio, Vermont [March 2004]; for the Bar Mitzvah of Edward William Colow-Russell [December 2004]
The Public Ecological Center conducts environmental impact assessments, campaigns against polluting industries, and promotes the development of an environmentally safe business sector. Group members also lobby government bodies for improved regional legislation, provide information to the mass-media, and run environmental education programs for school children. Valentina represents the only environmental NGO in the Sakha Republic who is relaying information to and from groups there on electronic mail. She needs some additional assistance in covering communication costs from this isolated city in north-central Siberia to the rest of the world.
