Donors: Anonymous Donors [February 1997]

NOTE: This project was fully funded by an American donor who wishes to remain anonymous. It was completed in May 1997.

Need:
"For Mother Earth" is one of the most active Slovak environmental NGOs. Most of our work is focused on the energy policy in our coutry trying to reshape it to one more based on sustainability and environmentally friendlier energy sources instead of nuclear and fossil fuels. The widest campaign we are undertaking is the one against the further construction of the Mochovce nuclear power plant in western Slovakia. Slovakia gets 50 percent of its electricity from Bohunice nuclear power plant, where two of its four reactors were determined to be among the 10 most dangerous reactors in the world by a US Department of Energy study. Mochovce NPP would be of Soviet design, unable to be improved to western standards. Our campaign already has experienced a huge success, removing the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development from the project. EBRD is an international development bank originally created to restore east Europeans' economies. By printing out the Worldwatch material we would be able to show the wrong decisions of the west and try not to follow them.

Goal:
The printing of the Worldwatch Paper 75 would be very cheap since most of the work would be done on our own. On the other hand we would be able to distribute a very respected material done by a very well known author and organization. It would be distributed among the decision makers, politicians, local governments in the affected areas, journalists, researchers etc.

Method of Implementation:
The translation would be done on our own, without any cost. It would be the second Worldwatch Institute material in Slovak {"For Mother Earth" has already printed the Nuclear Waste: The Problem That Won't Go Away brochure at our own cost}. The graphic layout and printing /on recycled paper/ would cost around one dollar per piece in the amount of approx. 500-1000 pieces. The only additional cost is mailing. We plan on 700 pieces to be printed out. All the work would be done on our own.

Outcomes:
The result of the project would be a trusted material which we would use while lobbying for a better energy policy in Slovakia. It would broaden and improve the name and image of our group {having close to 350 members} and would contribute to the campaign against Mochovce nuclear power plant construction in a very positive way. Any kind of cooperation with Worldwatch Institute could only help us to create a positive public image and that's why we plan to broaden it.

Project Time Frame:
The first Worldwatch Paper we printed out within less than two weeks- although under hard conditions. From the moment we would be aware of the fact we can print the brochure out it would take us about one month to translate it, print out and distribute among the leaders.
